Get Involved in Disability Ministry A Volunteer's StoryYou might have questions about what it's like to volunteer in Disabilities Ministries. Hearing from other volunteers can be helpful. Here's Tamara's story: As a family, we’ve discovered a place at church where we can volunteer together. We know we’re obeying God in doing it, but we also feel so good about taking part that it doesn’t seem like work. That place is Disabilities Ministries and the commitment is small. We only help one Friday every month at an event called "Respite Night." As the name implies, the night gives parents of children with disabilities a rest and night out knowing that their kids are being cared for in a safe and fun environment. We serve a meal to the children and then enjoy games, stories and play time together. By the end of the evening, the children sometimes cry when they have to leave us and we discover that God has done something unique in us all. The service we thought we had provided was really one given to us through those little ones who daily live with challenges. On the car ride home, we smile and laugh, retelling stories of the night. That's when I hear one of the kids ask, “Can we go back next Friday night?" Carry each other’s burdens and in this way you will fulfill the law of Christ (Galatians 6:2 NIV).
