The Bible
We can't really offer a recommended book list without mentioning the Bible. This is best book you could ever purchase and read. God tells us who he is, who we are and what our response to him ought to be in this book. If you want to hear from God, if you want to know him, you must read this bestseller regularly. Many times, people want to experience transformation and discover truth, but they are unwilling to do the work of opening the book that is the primary way that God speaks to us today. Buy a Bible (ESV, NIV or NASB are good options). You may want one with study notes in it, but remember that the study notes are aids to help your understanding. The study notes are not the inspired Word of God. Make a time, place and plan for when, where and what in the Word you will study.
