About six months ago, I stumbled across a powerful hymn called “The Head that Once was Crowned with Thorns.” I found the lyrics rich and Christ-exalting but the tune not so inspiring or singable. So I wrote a different melody in hopes that, as we sang these words of truth, God would lead us to deeper worship in spirit. And he has!
With the exception of the chorus and the final verse, the hymn text is by Thomas Kelly (1769-1855), a somewhat maverick minister of the Church of Ireland. Kelly was an earnest evangelist (that made him a maverick!), biblical scholar and hymn writer. He had a reputation for a joyful disposition, genuine humility, great zeal and a generous spirit.

Glory Now
The head that once was crowned with thorn
Is crowned with glory now.
A royal diadem adorns
The Mighty Victor’s brow.
The highest name that heav’n affords
Is His, is His by right.
The King of Kings and Lord of Lords
And heaven’s eternal light.
We suffer with our Lord below,
We reign with Him above,
Our profit and our joy to know
The mystery of His love.
The cross He bore is life and health,
Though shame and death to Him;
His people’s hope, His people’s wealth,
Their everlasting theme.
So Long-awaited Savior, come
With scepter, sword and crown!
Take up your just and rightful throne,
Come reign in glory now!
Thanks to Rob Barrett for making everything about the recording possible, the band guys (Steve, Bob, Justin, Matt), and vocalists (Peggy, Karin and Rob) for their wonderful musical contributions.
